How it works
Nobody has to take anyone at their word.
Almost every bad car hire story comes down to the same design flaw: the person holding your deposit is the person deciding whether to give it back. No neutral party, no shared record, no appeal.
Selo changes who holds the money and what the decision is made on. Here is exactly what happens, in order, on both sides of the counter.
If you are hiring a car
Five steps, and only one of them ever repeats.
Book at one all-in price
The number you see is the number you pay. No desk upsell, no ambush insurance, no fuel tricks, no admin fees. If a fee was not in the price you saw, it does not exist.
Get checked once, ever
Your licence is verified before you fly, either automatically in about a minute or by a person at Selo within a few hours. Your card is saved, not charged. Every booking after this one is sign in, pick dates, confirm.
Seal the car at pickup
A guided two-minute photo walkaround that you and the operator complete and sign together, then digitally seal. Every scratch that already existed is on the record before you drive off, which means it can never be pinned on you later.
Your deposit sits with us, not the desk
The excess is a pre-authorisation held by Selo at pickup. Not a charge, and not in the operator’s hands. Nobody at the rental company can touch it.
Return the car, get your money back
A clean return releases the hold automatically, target within the hour. If the operator files nothing within 48 hours, it releases anyway. You never chase anyone for your own money.
The detail, including what happens if a claim is filed against you: renter questions, answered.
The rental company doesn’t hold your money. We do.
That one sentence is the whole company. The excess is pre-authorised on your card and held by Selo, never charged and never handed to the operator. It releases automatically on a clean return. If damage is claimed, the claim is decided against the sealed record you both signed at pickup, only the adjudicated amount is ever taken, it is always capped at the excess, and both of you get the decision with its written reasoning.
Selo is the Portuguese word for seal. That is not decoration. It is the mechanism.
If you rent cars out
Fairness only counts if it runs both ways.
Most independent operators are honest businesses stuck carrying the reputation of their industry’s worst actors. The same evidence that protects a renter from an invented charge protects an operator from an invented denial.
You get vetted, then you get customers
We meet you, check your fleet, insurance and licensing, and keep the roster short. Then we send you Irish and UK travellers who would otherwise default to a brand they do not like either. Placement is never for sale, so a good fleet cannot be outbid.
Renters arrive already verified
Licence and identity are checked before they land. No document theatre at the desk. Your handover is a two-minute meet and greet, not twenty minutes of photocopying.
The sealed record protects you too
Because the condition is photographed and dual-signed at pickup, a renter cannot claim your existing damage was theirs, and cannot claim their damage was yours. Arguments become evidence.
You never hold a deposit again
No card terminals, no chargebacks, no reviews written in fury about a deposit you were entitled to keep. Selo secures the excess and takes the entire fight off your counter.
Real damage gets paid, fast
When damage is genuine, you file against the sealed record and we adjudicate against the evidence. Upheld claims are paid from the secured excess in days, without you chasing a customer who is already home in another country.
Run a fleet?
The commercial terms, the vetting standard and the sign-up are on the operator page. We only earn when you earn, and there is no listing fee or setup fee, ever.
See what Selo offers operators →The part nobody else does
We are building the record the industry would rather not exist.
You can find out whether a rental desk has friendly staff. You cannot find out the only thing that actually matters: whether they give the deposit back, how long they take, and what they charge for. Nobody records it. Not the review sites, and especially not the booking sites earning commission on the companies they rate.
So we are recording it. Every Selo rental produces a sealed, timestamped record of what was agreed at pickup, what was found at return, and what happened to the money. Not opinions, and not stars. Evidence, kept in a form that can be checked.
We will publish what that evidence shows, per operator, including for operators on our own roster and including when it does not flatter us. A record you cannot trust is worse than no record at all, so there are rules we hold ourselves to: we always show how many rentals a figure is based on, we never publish a number we cannot evidence, every operator gets an unedited right of reply, and no rating on Selo will ever be for sale, at any price, in any form.
This is being built now, and we will not publish a single figure until it is real.
Be first in when the fair option opens.
Why we started this: our story.
