Our story
Car hire lost our trust. We are building it back.
Selo started the way most honest companies do: with one traveller getting burned once too often. That traveller is me. I’m Oisín, I travel every chance I get, for the love of it and for work, and hiring a car is usually the moment a trip becomes properly yours. Which is why it stung to keep getting burned: prices that grew at the desk, insurance I never asked for after a delayed flight, deposits that took weeks to come back, and more than once a damage claim at the hand-back for a mark nobody had recorded at pickup, with no way for either side to prove a thing.
Eventually renting a car stopped feeling worth it, and millions of travellers make that same quiet calculation every year, while thousands of honest local rental businesses lose those customers to the reputation of their worst competitors.
I have spent my working life in why-don’t-we-fix-it mode: health technology first, a creative agency now. Selo is the same reflex pointed at car hire: the version of renting a car I kept wishing existed while standing at the desk, where nobody has to take anyone’s word for anything. That is the whole company.
For now it is just my first name here. Selo should be judged by its mechanism, not my CV. And if you have your own deposit story, I want to hear it: hello@selohire.com. I read everything.
What we believe
Trust is a mechanism, not a promise.
Nobody neutral holds the money
Every deposit dispute is decided by the side already holding the deposit. That is the root failure of car hire, so it is the first thing we changed: Selo holds the excess, not the rental desk, and releases it within an hour of a clean return.
Evidence should beat arguments
Selo is Portuguese for seal or stamp. At pickup, renter and operator photograph the car together in a guided two-minute walkaround, both sign it, and the record is digitally sealed so neither side can edit it afterwards. Claims are decided on that record, nothing else.
The price is the price
One all-in number when you book. No desk upsell, no ambush insurance, no fuel tricks, no admin fees. If a fee is not in the price you saw, it does not exist.
Good independents deserve the benefit of the doubt too
Most local operators are honest businesses stuck competing with the worst practices of their industry. Every operator is vetted in person before they list, the roster stays small, and placement is never for sale. Fairness runs both directions: the sealed record protects them from false claims exactly as it protects you from invented ones.
Where we are
Early, and honest about it.
Selo is being built between Dublin and the Algarve, and it is not open yet. We are starting deliberately small: a handful of destinations in southern Portugal and Spain, a short roster of independent operators, each one met and vetted in person before they list, and travellers from Ireland and the UK who are tired of the deposit lottery.
We would rather launch narrow and fair than wide and ordinary. Density before coverage, evidence before promises, and no operator on the roster we would not rent from ourselves.
Be first in when the fair option opens.
